exploits
  • It seems that changes to the laws in England have been proposed to make it illegal to create exploits and hacks. The problem is that the language seems so vague that it could include lots of other activities also. The language says it will be illegal to "prevent or hinder access to a computer, or impair the operation of any program or access to any data" which basically would include any DRM software, and then there's "prevent or hinder access to a computer" which could include using any firewall software.

This is just another example of a trend we've been seeing more and more, of governments trying to address a perceived problem through laws and not quite understanding all the issues. From the DMCA in the US, to the fight against P2P users, and the broadcast flag, this is just the latest example of a government system that fails to analyze technological issues completely before proposing new laws. Hopefully this will get modified before becoming law, because we all know looking at the DMCA that once a law is passed, it's very hard to get rid of it.
